Stacked washer-dryer units save floor space, but the layout around them determines whether laundry day is efficient or a daily frustration, something floor plans rarely show.

In the best-performing setup we reviewed, a fold-down counter above a hamper cart meant sorting and folding happened in the same three-foot radius as the machines, cutting steps significantly.

The weakest layout placed the units in a hallway with no adjacent counter at all, forcing every load to be carried to a bedroom to fold, which defeated much of the space-saving purpose in daily practice.
